How Secrets Fit Permafrost's Progression

Permafrost rewards exploration more than grinding. There is no traditional skill tree to inflate: new crafting recipes, weapons and gear arrive primarily through found blueprints and technology recovered from the frozen world. That design makes "secrets" a core loop, not a bonus — the player who checks the abandoned bus, the back room and the wrecked vehicles usually unlocks the next tier of equipment first.

This page collects the optional finds and activities reported by the community during Early Access. Treat it as a checklist of habits rather than a spoiler tour.

Loot That Is Easy to Miss

  • Wrecked vehicles: The cars and trucks scattered near Bunker Checkpoint reliably yield Scrap — the material the big repairs at Hunter's Glade and House Camp demand.
  • Checkpoint side rooms: Small buildings at checkpoints often hold Wire, tools or food. You do not need to clear an entire checkpoint; step into the buildings, then move on.
  • Abandoned shelters: Pre-disaster homes and camps can hide blueprints and supplies. Restore them where the story allows — some double as expedition havens.
  • Animal remains: After a hunt, use your shiv to harvest properly; skinned kills leave materials behind that sell or craft into gear.

Tip

Bring your dog when you loot. The publisher's survival overview describes the dog sniffing out loot, and community reports confirm it marks finds you would otherwise walk past.

Side Activities Worth a Detour

  • Hunting contracts: Optional hunting jobs in the woods pay out supplies and keep your pantry stocked. The Woods around the mid-game route are the natural hunting ground.
  • Trade: A trade menu lets you convert surplus materials into what you actually need. Community reports suggest saving currency for equipment repairs and supplies rather than fees.
  • Logan's membership (900 Bucks): Strictly optional. You can refuse, keep your money, and still advance the investigation through dialogue.
  • Technology recovery: Broken machines in the world can be repaired for recipes and routes forward — the quiet backbone of "secrets" in Permafrost.

What to Leave Alone (For Now)

Warning

Electric Boxes that refuse to open are a known trap for tool durability. If one will not open, move on and loot vehicles instead; do not burn your axe or crowbar on it.

The Bunker is controlled by the Moon Cult, whose patrols operate in the surrounding Woods. Scout with your dog and gear up before you poke around — the loot inside does not reward an underprepared visit.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Are there collectibles that unlock cosmetics?

Nothing cosmetic-only has been confirmed. Optional finds in Early Access are practical: blueprints, materials, supplies and routes forward.

Do loot spots respawn?

Respawns have not been confirmed by the developers. Plan around what you can carry, and use your dog's pack to haul heavy finds in one trip.

What is the best early "secret" to chase?

The vehicles near Bunker Checkpoint. They turn the Hunter's Glade repair grind into a short detour instead of a shortage crisis.

Can co-op partners see the same loot?

Loot and world state follow the host's world in co-op. Community reports also note shared quest progression, so decide who owns the world before farming together.
